Total Srat Move: Painted Coolers

Unfortunately, the University of Florida is usually among the first schools to go on spring break. I was stuck at home this year, which isn't a problem since I live near the beach, except that the weather was HORRIBLE. I lugged my cooler, tote, and beach chair down the street and soaked up as many rays as I possibly could on the one sunny day of break. Needless to say I ended up with a nice red glow.

With so much free time on my hands, I decided to put my creative talents to good use. With warmer weather and summer quickly approaching, I thought it would be a great idea to paint some mini coolers for my sisters and friends! I drove around to 7 stores until I ended up at Academy Sports where they had a HUGE selection of all different sized coolers at great prices. Academy was great too because they had more than enough mini coolers since I needed 6. If you are going to paint coolers, you MUST MUST MUST sand your cooler! I can not stress that enough. I'm sure if you're a part of the Cooler Connection on Facebook you have seen girls freaking out when someone posts and asks if sanding is really important and if only priming does the job just as well. NO. It doesn't. When I was a senior in high school I thought it was totally cool to try to be sratty. So I painted my small cooler pictured above (I recently redid it this past year), without sanding it and it was utter disaster and embarrassment. I took it to the beach one afternoon and after an hour the paint was peeling on all sides and completely ruined. With that said, I have a handheld power sander at home that makes sanding super convenient. If you aren't lucky enough to have a crazy mom who likes to refinish your wood floors by herself, a rough grit sandpaper should do the job. Just be patient and make sure you do a thorough job of sanding the entire cooler, or some areas may still remain slick and peel.

Here is the mini cooler I ended up purchasing after seeing many options. Its the Igloo 1/2 - Gallon Sport Jug and I was a bit  skeptical of the hooks on the handle, but they ended up being great when I sealed them since I was able to hang them up to dry. After sanding is done, I tape off the tops and handles of my coolers and use Krylon Spray Paint Plastic Primer in white in order to get a good base coat for the paint to adhere to. The primer coat doesn't have to be too thick, but if you have a bright cooler a few layers of primer may be ideal if you want to use light colors in your design.

(I spray painted outside and dried inside on newspaper because of our curious outdoor kitty)

I decided that I would paint Lilly Pulitzer inspired designs since Lilly is the best summer accessory. If you are going to paint Lilly patterns, its important that you look at the layers of colors. In almost every Lilly print, you can see some white coming through the background and most objects (flowers, jellies, pineapples, etc.) are painted softly and then roughly outlined in a darker accent color. For the monogram, if you search "monogram maker" on Pinterest a few good sites that are easy to work with will come up. This one is what I use. Just print it out to the size of your liking, shade the back side of the paper with a pencil, tape it on to your cooler, and trace the monogram to leave a pencil outline. I recommend using Sharpie oil based paint pens to get a clean, crisp look. After painting the fronts in the Lilly patterns, I did a cute quote on the back of each cooler. The backs weren't as detailed as I usually like to be since I was short on time, but I think they turned out nice! Now on to sealing. Sealing is just as important as sanding. After the paint has dried, I use Mod Podge in a gloss finish (because I like things shiny) to seal the paint so it won't bleed when you do the next step of sealing. After the Mod Podge is completely dry, I do at least two coats of Miniwax Polycrylic in semi gloss. Its important that you allow for enough drying time in between coats so it doesn't end up as one big sticky mess. The last step of sealing is polyurethane. Because the polycrylic is not waterproof, polyurethane is necessary to making sure your cooler won't melt in the heat or get messed up after a quick rinse. I use one coat of Miniwax Polyurethane in semi-gloss and it's extremely important that you apply thin coats or else it will yellow badly. If you have a lot of white areas on your cooler, you should apply more coats of the polycrylic to make yellowing less likely.

Once the coolers have dried, fill up with your favorite fruity beverage and hit the beach or pool! Happy cooler painting and happy tanning season!!

Be My Valentine

The time of year that either makes you want to puke and stay home all day, or makes you want to spoil your S.O., is finally behind us. In elementary school, Valentine's Day was one of the best days of the year because you couldn't wait to receive cards and candy from your classmates, also an extra bonus if the cutie who was your crush wrote something special like a heart on your Valentine. Growing up, I've noticed that Valentine's Day, like every other holiday, has become so commercialized and focused on material things, that we sometimes forget the real reasons why we are celebrating in the first place. If you are single, Valentine's Day may just seem like another day out of the year, or you may be sick of seeing all the couples who you can't imagine are actually real human beings because they seem way too happy and in love. If either of those scenarios are the case, you should look at Valentine's Day as an excuse to spend extra time with family or friends and show them why they are super important in your life! Have a wine night with the girls watching rom coms, or spend time cooking dinner with your mom for the family. I'm always looking for excuses to do both of those. If you are in a relationship, Valentine's Day is a great time to remind your significant other how much you love them. Personally, I love going out and getting dolled up, but I think Valentine's is a great time to relax and do something more thoughtful. If you are in the right relationship, Valentine's shouldn't be the only day your boyfriend or girlfriend pampers you, but it is a reminder of the love that you have for each other. This year, I was one of the "annoying" people in a happy relationship who was looking forward to this day because I was so curious to see what my boyfriend had planned...

This Valentine's Day was filled with so many surprises! My sweet boyfriend surprised me by cooking my favorite dinner, filet mignon. He did such a great job, I felt like I was eating at a fancy restaurant, except it was even better because it was just us.

After dinner we made chocolate covered strawberries! They were the perfect treat after a heavy meal.

I love to bake, so I decided to make my boyfriend this awesome Conversation Heart Piñata Cake that  I found at Hungry Happenings! My version wasn't as perfect, but I loved how it turned out. It totally surprised my boyfriend when he cut into it.

Whether you are single or in a relationship, Valentine's Day is the perfect time to focus on your loved ones and show how special they are to you. I hope everyone had as great of a day as I did! xoxo

2014

Spring semester is here! I am beyond excited for a new class schedule. Along with new classes come new faces, which I am also thrilled about. I feel as if fall semester was beginning to get quite stale, and it definitely took a nice long Christmas break to get me relaxed and ready to take on Gainesvegas again.

Although it is a new semester, it is also a new year. Not going to lie 2013 was probably one of the worst years I have had to endure in my young life. I decided not to play college golf, started hanging with the wrong people, partied probably a little too much, went through a horrible relationship, the Gators had one of their worst football seasons in years, and I was just plain out depressed for most of summer and even bits of fall semester. Despite all the things that went wrong for me this past year, I can still look at the positives and be thankful. I was accepted to the University of Florida, won Female Athlete of the Year for my high school, graduated, learned a great life lesson about relationships, and I’m one credit away from being a junior. My family is always there for me, despite the friends and boyfriends who come and go; I know my family supports and loves me no matter what. Everyone should feel that kind of unconditional love; I don’t know what I would do without it.

2014 is going to be much different. I already feel so much better than I did last year, and I know it’s a bit cliché to have resolutions, but here are mine:

  • ·      Put myself first! Not in a selfish way, but I’m not going to run after people who want me because I’m convenient for them. Working out more and eating right are my new priorities. No party or amount of alcohol is worth running yourself down in the long run, when that satisfaction only lasts for quite a short time.
  • ·      Focus on school! With 17 credits this semester, I don’t know how I would be able to pass and not focus on grades. I’m so excited because I’m finally starting to take key courses to really dive into my major. In 8 weeks, I plan on taking the News Test, which is a pretty big deal when you’re a News Telecom major. I already love all of my classes, so I know this resolution won’t be as difficult as it was last semester.
  • ·      Be HAPPY! As simple as it is, I feel like I’m not carefree enough. Time to time I find myself worrying about the future or what other people think about me. Taking time to enjoy the little things in life and truly slowing down from the crazy pace of everyday tasks can do wonders for your mood. It has for me.

As I sit here typing this in Weimar, I can’t help but think of the amazing future that it holds for me. I can’t wait to begin developing my career and learning new things, not just in my field, but also about myself. The world is full or possibilities, you just have to be willing to put in the work and go out and get them. I know 2014 is going to be full of new chances. That’s my mantra. Forgetting about the old, moving on to the new.

“It happens to everyone as they grow up. You find out who you are and what you want, and then you realize that people you've known forever don't see things the way you do. So you keep the wonderful memories, but find yourself moving on.”
― Nicholas Sparks

I hope everyone has had just as an amazing start to the New Year as I have!

Xoxo

Day Trip

St. Augustine, the oldest city in America, happens to only be about forty minutes south of where I live. So this makes it a great destination for a day trip! During high school it was nothing for me and a couple of my girl friends to hop in the car and hit the old city for a night out. In St. Augustine, there is something for everyone. The old fort and numerous other historical sites, many pubs and bars, quaint bed and breakfasts, cute boutiques, great seafoods dives, and many other attractions put St. Augustine on the map as one of the biggest tourist traps.

Today, I drove down to St. Augustine with my mom and sister to enjoy a day of leisurely walking around the city. Since it was a Monday, we forgot about all the people who were still off of work or off of school for the winter holidays. We drove around the cobblestone streets aimlessly searching for anywhere to park since the garage and many other lots were completely full. After about an hour we finally made it down St. George Street to Al's Pizza for lunch. We have many Al's Pizza back at home, so that was nothing special. Normally, we love to eat at O'Steen's because they have the best fried shrimp on this planet, but they're closed on Monday's. Following our veggie pizza, we walked back up St. George Street to The Hyppo, where we got some delightful ice pops. You can check them out here.

I got the coconut ice pop, and it was wonderful! It was very refreshing and even had pieces of coconut in it. Yummy! The Hyppo is like a little hut, located outside. You would never expect that they would have such amazing gourmet ice pops!

Lauren got Banilla Vanana, and Mom got Chocolate Cheesecake!
Mmmmmm!

We also stopped in one of my favorite boutiques on St. George Street, the Red Pineapple. They have adorable dresses, jewelry, shoes, and vintage gifts. Check out their facebook page!

Cathedral Basilica and the Casa Monica are also some of my most favorite places in St. Augustine. No, I don't have my entire wedding planned out on Pinterest yet, but it would be quite lovely to have a Catholic ceremony in the cathedral and a reception at Casa Monica. A girl can dream. . .

When visiting, I sometimes envy the kids that get to go to Flagler. UF is a far better school overall, but Flagler is located in the heart of one of the prettiest cities. With so much history and charm, how can someone not love St. Augustine? I know I always will, and I can't wait for many more day trips to come.

OOTD

Today I went to the St. John's Town Center with my mom, which is one of my favorite things to do. Who doesn't love shopping? So I thought that I would take this shopping opportunity to wear some of my new Christmas clothes.

I wore my new Ralph Lauren plaid ruffle shirt under my Ann Taylor vest (that I've had since 6th grade), my Ralph Lauren jeans, and my Ralph Lauren riding boots. I wore my gold monogram necklace along with my Juicy Couture watch, a gold bracelet that my best friend Hannah gave me for Christmas last year, and my great Aunt Mary's pearls.

At the Town Center, I picked up my usual makeup. For my foundation, I wear Lancome Teint Idole Ultra 24H Makeup that has a SPF 15 and doesn't clog my pores at like other liquid foundations have. For my concealer I wear Lancome Effacernes Waterproof and the coverage is great, but not cakey. I finish that off with the Lancome Dual Finish powder which I absolutely adore. It's great for getting a matte look, or touching up throughout the day. I also picked up some of the Lancome Hypnose Star mascara in Noir Midnight. It is my all time favorite and makes my lashes look super full, but not clumpy.

Also I received a $30 gift card to Sephora, so I thought I would take a look at some of their products. I didn't want to spend that much money on other lines since I usually wear Lancome, so I decided to check out Sephora's line. I purchased Sephora's MicroSmooth Baked Sculpting Trio, perfect for contouring and highlighting, Sephora's Long Lasting Blush in icy fuchsia, and Sephora's Rough Shine lipstick. The colors are pretty bright compared to what I wear on a daily basis, but I thought they would be fun for a change! After I try them out I'll let y'all know what I think!

Domesticated

Most of my life I've had my mom there to do everything for me. Going to college this year has really opened my eyes up to trying and doing new things. One task I have really been trying to get better at is cooking. It's quite obvious that I LOVE to bake and I'm pretty good at it, but cooking is a different animal. There's not exactly a set time or set amount of ingredients you need to use like there is with baking. Cooking allows for more freedom and exploration, which is exciting since you can make a dish your own. It is also a bit intimidating for a novice chef like myself. Growing up, the most cooking I did was making the scrambled eggs on Saturdays for our big breakfast. I was so excited when I moved to Lakeside because there was a kitchen for just us, unlike the other dorms.  Now I have been able to practice my cooking for a whole semester and decided that I needed to share my new skills with my family back at home.

Sooo tonight I made this tasty Lime Cilantro Chicken and it was wonderful. I also made some of my favorite homemade baked fries. The dinner was a success with everyone, especially my dad who is a very picky eater. It's just a start, but I'm excited to try new things and explore different recipes!

Christmas

This Christmas was probably one of the best so far. It was the first Christmas that I didn't feel like a child anymore. Instead, I took my time enjoying each present I was unwrapping and doted on my 9 year old sister and what Santa had brought her. The feeling was great. I enjoyed watching everyone else open their gifts, especially my mom. My favorite present had to be the "Barbie, I Can Be A Reporter" camera and microphone my mom gave me to be silly. She thought that I would be able to practice for when I'm actually a news anchor, quite funny.

I was very busy this Christmas. From mass, family gatherings, crafting, baking, and sport outings, my time was not very disposable. For all the ladies in my family, I made initial and monogram ornaments. They came out much better than I expected, especially after I thought to add a special bow on each one! They were a huge success and added a flare of prep and bling to everyone's Christmas tree.

I also made a wonderful Chocolate Peppermint Cheesecake Cake that was to die for. I don't know what I would do without Pinterest. It came out perfect!

xoxo Merry Christmas
